Democratic Governance

More countries than ever before are working to promote democratic governance. The challenge is to develop institutions and processes that are more responsive to the needs of ordinary citizens, including the poor. UNDP contributes to bringing people together within nations and around the world, building partnerships and sharing ways to promote participation, accountability and effectiveness at all levels. We help countries strengthen their electoral and legislative systems, improve access to justice and public administration, and develop a gender capacity to deliver basic services to those most in need.

A fundamental part of the mission of UNDP's office in Guyana is to support the government’s efforts to achieve sustainable human development through a deepening of democracy. This involves capacity building and support to key national institutions of governance such as:

- The Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM)
- The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC)
