A new branch of the Guyana Red Cross Society was officially opened in Lethem in
March of this year. The 1998 El Nino relief efforts in that area produced many willing and
capable volunteers many of whom participated in First Aid Instructor training in March
corresponding with the official branch opening

On Red Cross Day (May 8th) the first babies born at the Georgetown public
hospital or rather their mothers were presented with hampers of baby stuff to kick off the
Guyana Red Cross Societie's Millenium Year.

The Power of Humanity was the theme of
celebrations at the annual dinner and dance held on May 29th this year. Excellent support
from the community and an exciting programme including traditional dances from around the
world (not featured above) made the evening a success.

Three Red Cross Youth's were chosen to
represent Guyana at the Youth Summit in June. Sherene Williams, Ruth Fraser and
Phillip Jaiserisingh spent a week in Sweden participating in humanitarian leadership
activities and have been quite active in sharing their experience since their return.
