MISSION STATEMENT:

TO SHARE IN THE PROVISION OF SERVICES FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE GUYANESE SOCIETY FROM CRIME AND DELINQUENCY AND THE PROMOTION OF THE WELFARE OF MEMBERS OF THE SOCIETY, ESPECIALLY CHILDREN IN ESPECIALLY DIFFICULT CIRCUMSTANCES, SO THAT NATIONAL GOALS CAN BE ACHIEVED WITH THE MINIMAL DISRUPTION AND WITH MAXIMUM CONTRIBUTION

This section of the Ministry offers a combination of probation and welfare services.  Its main areas of concern are issues of crime and crime prevention, juvenile crime and delinquency, and the care and welfare of children throughout Guyana

It offers the nation and, from time to time overseas agencies, the following services: -
 
Investigation and preparation of Social Enquiry Reports for the Courts.
The supervision of persons placed on probation and those released from prison.
The provision of after care and rehabilitative services
Assistance in matrimonial conciliation issues and other related family matters.
The investigation of reported cases of child neglect, abuse, etc.
Identification and provision of assistance to children in difficult circumstances.
Monitoring special children’s Homes/ Institutions.
Direct supervision of Mahaica Children’s Home.
Facilitating the process for the adoption of children.
Prison Welfare services.
Public education programmes – Lectures on social issues related to the functions of the department
Participation in social work training and the provision of field practice for university students.
Close collaborative working relationships with the Courts of Criminal Jurisdiction especially the Juvenile Courts.
Submissions to International Social Agencies, at their request, reports on the social and economic background of migrants if the need arises, and information on the fostering of children, etc.
