THE PALMS GERIATRIC FACILITY

This institution is a geriatric facility which is popularly known as THE PALMS.  It is a home for indigent senior citizens of Guyana, and is the only such institution which is fully funded by Government.  It operates within the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.
 

THE KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS INSTITUTION INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: -
 
Provision of in-house and other training opportunities for the development of staff who serve the institution.
Promotion of public awareness programmes re services available at the institution
Securing resources required for the execution of programmes for the welfare of residents
Ensuring the provision of recommended dietary requirements for residents of the institution
Provision of rehabilitative therapies for both residents and out-patients
Provision and ongoing development of recreational and social activities for residents
Provision of medical and nursing services to residents and out-patients
The operation of a medical referral service to the Georgetown Hospital
Services of an on-site dispensary unit
Provision of support for disposal/interment of inpatients as might be necessary
 Craft work, under supervision, is done by residents of the institution.

SERVICES PROVIDED
 
A twenty-four hour care service is maintained by a team of about 130 personnel headed by an Administrator with support services provided by a Doctor, matron and other medical and ancillary staff, who are responsible for all other services required for the operation of the facility.
Physiotherapy, Public Health Clinics and a Pharmacy are available in this institution, through collaborative arrangements with the Ministry of Health and Labour. Monthly visits are paid by a Psychiatrist.

ADMISSIONS

Entry to the Institution is determined after investigations by a social worker and an assessment by the Administrator, Doctor and Matron.  In some instances a review of the circumstances of some residents admitted to the institution, may result in such persons being relocated to their families.
 
 

WELFARE SERVICES

Social work support is provided by a full-time welfare officer who deals with the problems of residents, and liaises with their homes, next of kin, etc.
