“The National Commission for the Family, recognizing the fact that the family is the cornerstone of society, is committed to the development of stable and cohesive families through the effective mobilisation, coordination and use of appropriate human and other resources available in Guyana and elsewhere”. |
The National Commission for the Family which comprises fifteen persons was launched in 1998.
In the execution of its primary functions the Commission will work in
collaboration with relevant Ministries, Agencies and NGO’s.
Its functions
are as follows:
| To ascertain the welfare of the family in terms of: | |

a) Emotional needs b) Economic needs c) Education and guidance d) Health of the entire family |
|
| To sensitise the public to the various services or programmes relating to family life which are available from relevant organisations or agencies. | |
| To promote the work of the Commission through the media i.e. | |
| a) Newspaper
b) Radio c) Television d) Occasional publications such as brochures, pamphlets etc. |
|
| To work in collaboration with other boards and commissions of the Ministry in matters relating to the family, and special groups such as persons with disabilities and the elderly. |
The Commission has so far developed a DRAFT Family
Code for Guyana, which has been submitted to public
consultation in three Regions. Additionally,
the Justice Desiree Bernard Committee's proposal for the establishment
of a Family Court has been adopted and is now being
examined by the relevant law officers.
The overall goal of the Commission is to improve
the quality of Family Life in Guyana.
