GIVE BLOOD! SAVE A LIFE!
The National Blood Transfusion Centre plays a vital role in the health care delivery system of Guyana. It provides a needed service to both the public and private hospitals including the country's main referral hospital - the Public Hospital Georgetown where the Centre is sited. The Centre depends on donors for its existence. The military and non-governmental organisations play key roles in keeping the Centre supplied with blood. Donations are collected at the Centre in Georgetown or at locations around the country using the Centre's mobile facility. With a storage capacity of 5000 pints,, only 60 percent of the storage capacity is utilised. A sustained public awareness exercise keeps the need for blood donations in the public's eye. The professional staff at the Centre ensures that all donors are screened for HIV, Syphilis,, Malaria and Hepatitis in order to keep the Centre's supply free of contamination. The Centre is in need at all times for blood. Donating blood twice per year Is know to provide the blood regenerating cells of the body the opportunity to function. Unlike what Is believed by some persons, donating blood is a healthy exercise that contributes to the maintenance of the body.
