Diploma
in Agriculture
This is a two-year sub-professional course designed for
graduates of secondary schools and trained teachers who hope to become professional
agricultural science teachers or agriculture field assistants.
Diploma
in Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health
This is a two-year sub-professional course designed for
graduates of secondary schools and trained teachers who hope to become professional
agricultural science teachers or agriculture field and animal health assistants.
Diploma in Livestock Production and Management
This is a two-year sub-professional course designed for
graduates of secondary schools and trained teachers who hope to become professional
livestock production manager, science teachers or agriculture field assistants.
Certificate
in Agriculture
This two-year course has a strong practical bias and is
intended for youths with a full primary education and who have attained the age of 17
years. It is designed to equip young people for successful farming careers.
Certificate
in Forestry
This is a one-year programme to stimulate interest in
forestry, to produce forest technicians and equip them with the knowledge of the
principles of sustainable forestry, and provide a foundation for further career
development in forestry.
N.B. Camping facilities will be
provided for two one-week field camps and other related trips.

A student's final assessment depends on the
following:
- Examinations; Regular Examinations (Mid-Term & Final),
Supplemental Examinations; Resit Examinations
- Practical Assignments, Course Work
- Continuous Assessments
- Attendance

Students may choose to achieve a Distinction, Credit
or Pass in either course upon completion of the entire programme. The grading ceilings are
as follows:

Criteria for Examinations
Each student is required to
attend not less than 75% of the lectures in each subject are before he/she is allowed to
write the end of term examination in that subject area.
Approval for absence from an
examination is given only for illness or compassionate reasons. In the
case of illnesses, a
medical certificate from a Qualified Medical Officer must be submitted to the Principal.
for an absence due to compassionate reasons, the student must have prior approval from the
Principal.
There will be an examination at
the end of each term which will account for 60-75% of the overall grades.
Mid-Term examinations will be scheduled for each term of the academic year. Quizzes and
other course-work assignments should assignments will account for 25 - 40% of the terminal
grades.
Supplemental Examinations are
intended for those who, on account of illness or compassionate reasons, were unable to
write the regular examinations. The scheduling of these examinations will be within the
control and discretion of the Administration of the school.
If a student fails to attain a
pass at the regular examinations he/she must write the resit examination/s. No more than
two (2) such opportunities will be granted within three (3) years following the first
sitting.
Resit examinations for the first
year students will be conducted during the September - October period. Students will be
notified of any changes in the dates of these examinations.
For the final year students - Agriculture and Forestry, resit examinations will be held
during may of each academic year for subjects failed in Terms 1 and 2 of the final year.
Resit examinations for courses failed in Term 3 of the final year, will be conducted
during the September - October period.
A student who resits an
examination and scores a pass will not receive a score higher than 50% and his/her
cumulative average will be calculated on the score of 50%.
Review of Examination Results
A student may have his/her end
of term examination results in a subject and practical assessment reviewed, upon a written
application to the Principal within seven (7) days of the publication of the results.
A fee of two thousand dollars
($2,000.00) will be charged for each review. if the review is successful, the sum of two
thousand dollars will be refunded to the applicant.
The review will be done by both
the internal and external examiners if the subject is an externally examined one.

A pass in any subject is set at 50%. |

To graduate a student must make a
Cumulative Average of 60% (at the end of the two years) and pass in all courses either at
the regular examinations or at both regular resit examinations prescribed by the
Administration of the school. |

Students are required to attend at least 75%
of each term's Forestry/ Farm Practical sessions before an end of term farm grade is
given. A student must obtain a Cumulative Average of not less than 75% in practical
sessions over the entire course and pass each term of farm
practicals.. |

(a). |
A Diploma II student will be awarded a
Diploma-Pass, if he/she attains a minimum Cumulative Average of 60% and a pass mark in all
courses either at the regular examinations or at both resit and regular examinations. |

(b) |
A Diploma II Student who fails to obtain the
required 60% cumulative average but not less than 55% will be awarded a Certificate and
not a Diploma provided that he/she passes all required courses for the Certificate
programme at the regular or resit examinations. |
|
(c) |
A Diploma I student who is transferred to the
Certificate II class at the end of the first year must attain a cumulative average of 60%
in the second year and a pass in all courses at he regular and resit examinations to be
awarded a Certificate in Agriculture. |

(a) |
A Certificate student will be awarded a
Certificate-Pass if he/she has attained a minimum cumulative average of 60% and a pass
mark in all courses either at the regular examination or at both regular and resit
examination. |

(b) |
A Certificate
student who passes all the courses either at the regular examination or at both regular
and resit examination, but fails to get the required 60% cumulative average at the end of
the final year, will be invited by the administration to repeat the final year or pursue
any other prescribed course of action that will allow him/her to improve the cumulative
average.
No more than one (1) such
opportunity will be granted within (2) years following the final year. |

The overall average grades for the two-year
period may be interpreted as follows:
Pass with Distinction 80% and above
Pass with Credit
70%
and above but less than 80%
Ordinary Pass
60% and above but less than 70%
A student who does a successful resit and referral examination
will not be eligible for higher awards of "Credit" or "Distinction". |

Aegrotat - Students may be considered for the
award of an Argrotat - Diploma or Certificate, on medical grounds provided that he/she
passes in all subjects and maintain a Cumulative Average of 60% at all the examination
preceding the end of the course. |
| 8. |
|
Certificate of Participation - A Certificate
of Participation may be given to either a Diploma or Certificate in Agriculture / Forestry
student who would have been in full-time attendance at the Guyana School of Agriculture
during the one or two course and has:
- Obtained a Cumulative Average of not less than 75% in
Forestry and Farm Practicals over the entire course.
- Pursued all the required subject areas in either the Diploma
or Certificate programme, but failed to satisfy the Criteria for Certification.
- Showed a distinct interest in the practice of Agriculture or
Forestry.

Eligility for Promotion to Year II. |
|
(a) |
A Diploma Year I student is eligible for
promotion to year II if he/she attains a minimum Cumulative Average of 55% and does not
fail in more than three (3) courses. |
|
(b) |
A Diploma I student who fails to make the
Cumulative Average of 55% but not less than 50% will be placed in the second year
Certificate class provided he/she has not failed in more then three (3) subject areas. |
|
(c) |
A Certificate I student will be eligible for
promotion to Certificate II if he/she attains a minimum Cumulative Average of 55% and not
failed in more then three (3) courses. |
|
(d) |
A year I Certificate in Agriculture student
will be eligible for transfer to the Diploma Class (year I) if: (i).
at the beginning of the second term (of the
first year) the Cumulative Average for the first term was not less than
85% and provided he/she had not failed in any subject. He/she will then be eligible
for graduation at the end of two years provided he/she has satisfied the requirements
for Certification.
(ii). at the beginning of the
second year the Cumulative Average for the first year was not less than 80% and
he/she had not failed in any subject. In this case the student will be promoted to the
Diploma Class (Year I) and will therefore be spending three (3) years in all before
graduating, providing he/she has satisfied the requirements for Certification. |

|
A student may be asked to withdraw from the
Guyana School of Agriculture if his/her academic performance and general conduct are
deemed unsatisfactory by the Administration. |
| 11. |
|
A student who repeats either the first or
second year programme will not be granted exemption from or credited for any of the
academic courses or practical sessions done previously irrespective of his/her grades. |
| 12. |
|
A Certificate in Agriculture graduate who is
admitted to the Diploma Programme will not be granted exemption from any of the academic
courses or practical sessions previously done irrespective of his/her grades. |
