The public education activities were co-ordinated under a UNIFEM Trust
Fund project.
December
2002
- H & S participated in a workshop on Domestic Violence hosted
by the Guyana chapter of CAFRA
- A session was held with the Deliverance Tabernacle church
in Vreed En Hoop
November
2002
- Help &
Shelter offered knowledge resources to the University of Guyana
Students - participating in the first year Social Work programme
workshop, and during the week of 25 November, 2002 -
- Media
Activities were held to Commemorate World Day for the Prevention of
Child Abuse on 19 November, 2002 and the anniversary of the Convention
on the Rights of the Child on 20 November, 2002. These include :-
- In
collaboration with the Guyana Broadcasting Corporation - a view point,
a radio discussion on Child Abuse
- A small
donation from an anonymous donor allowed for the airing of some public
services advertisements against corporal punishment
- Talks were
held with students of the YWCA, School of the Nations and the Bishops'
High School
- Girl Talk,
a TV programme produced by Pat Woolford and Andrea McAdam hosted
discussions on child abuse and domestic violence.
- 25 November,
2002 was International Day against Violence Against Women and the
anniversary of the launch of Help & Shelter's crisis service. The
Women's Affairs Bureau and other entities organised events in which
Help & Shelter participated/facilitated . These included :-
- A symposium
on domestic violence at the City Hall
- A march and
rally
- Media
presentations - press releases, television discussions, view point on
the radio station
- Participation
in two events organised by the University of Guyana Women Studies Unit
- a panel discussion on dating violence and a candelight vigil
- H & S
participated in a the Youth Elder Summit organised by the Ghost River
Rediscovery project, Carter Centre and the Bina Hill Institute in
Region 9
October

- An orientation session was held for persons interested in
learning about Domestic Violence and child abuse
- A radio programme , Youth Focus hosted discussions on child
abuse and domestic violence
- H & S participated in the Youth Can Move the World
workshops organised by the Varqua foundation
- Awareness sessions were held with the Guyana Public Service
Union, the school run by the African Cultural and Development
Association and via a radio programme Youth Focus
- An exhibition booth was established at Critchlow Labour college
as part of their anniversary activities. The response was very good.
September

- Participated
in workshop at Annai, sponsored by the Amerindian People's Association
- The Government of Canada approves a Canada - Caribbean Gender
Equality Project. Details in the donor part of the website.

- Sessions on DV were held with youths at the Presbytarian Youth
Camp at Camp Kayuka, the Youth Camp of the Ministry of Culture Youth
and Sports; the fourth form classes held by the Ministry of Education
(this was done in collaboration with Red Thread)
- A presentation on Violence Against Women was made to the
Indigenous Women's Conference sponsored by the Amerindian People's
Association
- H&S participated in a technical group organised by the
Ministry of Labour, Human Services, Social Security to review the draft
Children's Bill.
- The Guyana Chronicle
partners with Help & Shelter to produce a series of articles on
domestic violence and child abuse.
July
2002
- Mr Calvin Bell conducts the Perpetrator Rehabilitation training
for trainers, under the UNIFEM project
- H & S hosted a public forum on Masculinity - Is it in Men's
Best Interest
- The Guyana Chronicle launches a series of articles which are
written by Help & Shelter on issues around domestic violence and
child abuse
- The Essequibo Prant of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha hosts two
events to discuss domestic violence and child abuse.

public forum on 'The Changing role of the father' in the face of
globalisation

The German Government donates G$862,000 towards the
purchase of equipment and materials for skills training for the women
in the Shelter
A session was held with some students at the Red Cross
Headquarters
A booth is hosted at the Guyana Mela to commemorate Indian Arrival
Day.
Discussions on child abuse were held on Girl Talk on Channel 9, and
Swans Show on Channel 69
H&S participated in a radio programme "Empowering the Family to
engender Social Change "for International Day of the Family
Discussion on Domestic violence were held with the members of the
Family Life Committee of the Holy Rosary Parish, and with the visitors
to the Kitty Health Centre ante-natal clinic
The first batch of chickens are sold from the IICA funded chicken
rearing programme

- An award was presented to Help & Shelter from the International Year of the Volunteers

with Help & Shelter to produce two radio spots for airing.

- International Women's Day activities are focussed around 'Value
Women's Wages'. Help & Shelter supports the groups and individuals
who raised awareness of the Wages for Housework and other related
issues.
- Help & Shelter facilitates the Domestic Violence component of
the UG Caribbean Studies course on International Women's Day
- An awareness session was held at the Lusignan Assemblies of God
- A workshop on child abuse awareness was facilitated with the
Rights of the Child Committee of Region 6, Berbice
February
2002
- The Stabroek News has an editorial on Domestic
Violence following the brutal murder of Taijwantie Sooklall by her
former partner.
- Help & Shelter facilitates a three day workshop in Region 2 -
Essequibo , in collaboration with the Institute of Distance and
Continuing Education of the University of Guyana
- An awareness session is held with the Sixth Formers of the School
of the Nations
- The CAFRA training cointinues with a police workshop and a social
worker workshop. Help & Shelter staff contribute to those workshops.
January
2002
- The plans for 2002 are made. New activities include the
development of the perpetrators programme, continuing to fund raise and
to develop the hotline
- Stabroek News publishes a feature - Abused
Women Tell Their Stories
- Two public discussions are held by the New Amsterdam Family Life
Commission of the Roman Catholic Church in New Amsterdam. The events
are facilitated by Help & Shelter.
- A presentation on domestic violence is made to the New Amsterdam
Maha Sabha temple
