Guyana Is First
is an NGO, the founding members of which began formally meeting in April
1999. It's members are committed to the following mission statement:
"To heal the nation
and to promote and sponsor a destiny of hope and well being for all Guyanese"
Our
aims and objectives:
-
To empower citizens,
through the dissemination of accurate and relevant data and information.
-
To play a more participatory
role in their own development and that of the country.
-
To advocate for the
fullest possible inclusion of border dwelling communities in all issues
that affect their well being.
-
To promote peace and
harmonious relations among all peoples of Guyana in all regions of
our country, beginning in the primary schools, and between the people of
Guyana and it's neighbours.
-
To promote personal
development and equal opportunity for every Guyanese regardless of race,
gender or religion.
-
To foster and maintain
a sense of national pride and identity.
-
To promote and
maintain public participation in all matters of national interest, through
the dissemination of accurate data.
Our group is trying to fill information gaps in the nation
so we invited a number of persons to address us. We initially invited Mr.
Rashleigh Jackson (former Minister of Foreign Affairs) and Major
General Joe Singh (Chief-of-Staff, Guyana Defence Force). After learning
from them we realised that there was much we ourselves didn't know about
the history of Guyana's borders. We then invited the Venezuelan Ambassador
and decided to bring him, along with a number of others, to a wider-
National Forum.
Since our inception, our efforts have centred on research,
lobbying and discussing issues of national importance. In this capacity,
Guyana Is First has met with several
individuals and organisations.
-
Her Excellency, Former President Janet Jagan, on the
way forward.
-
Representatives of the Constitution Reform Commission
-
Members of the Amerindian Peoples Association (APA)
on the effects of the expansion of the boundaries of Kaieteur National
Park. Guyana Is First lobbied with this group to ensure the government's
review of this situation.
-
Representatives of the Guyana Public Service Union during
the prolonged strike.
