There are five prisons in Guyana. The Guyana Prison Service Headquarters are located in Georgetown, as is the largest prison in Guyana, known as Georgetown Prison. The second prison located along the Essequibo River, near Bartica, is called Mazaruni Prison. The third prison is located south of Georgetown near the Cheddi Jagan International Airport known as Timheri Prison. The fourth prison which is the main housing of female inmates is located along the north east coast of Guyana and is known as New Amsterdam prison. The fifth prison is also located along the north east coast between Georgetown and New Amsterdam, and is known as Lusigan Prison.
