To provide and maintain an environment conducive to effective teaching and learning, thus enabling the child to function effectively in the society in which he/she finds himself/herself.
Skeldon High School is cognizant of the fact that education is a social process, which should aim at the development of the full potentials of the child. The child should be given the opportunity to know himself, thus enabling him to recognize his strengths and weaknesses so that he would become capable of self-direction, self-discipline and evaluation.
Each teacher shall therefore endeavour to develop in each pupil a positive self concept so that the individual will see himself as a person adequate in performing curricular tasks; open to new experiences, ready to grow and willing to experiment and discover.
The school is also cognizant of the fact that education is cultural instrument whose function is the three fold one of conserving, transmitting and renewing the culture.
The school shall at all times pay a pivotal role in creating an environment
in which correct knowledge and skills are developed
and desirable attitudes, habits and values are inculcated. The pupils shall
therefore be able to promote the development of
the community and Co-operative Republic of Guyana.
Skeldon High school, formerly ,Upper Corentyne High School was started on January 1945 with 23 students under Hajji Ramjohn’s bottom house at Springlands. The School was started so as to meet the needs of the Skeldon Area but because of the need for quality secondary education, its boundaries extended along the coast.
The Lutheran Church took over the school and brought it to the Lutheran Church Compound in 1947. There it was given the name “Skeldon Lutheran School".
Physical conditions proved inadequate and request was made to the Lutheran Church which in turn approached Bookers Sugar Estate to lease a piece of land so as to house the new school. Contacts were successful and a new wooden building was constructed to house both the church and the school. Unfortunately during the construction period the building fell off its blocks and no efforts was made to raise it. It resembled very much a “Horse Stable” which was constructed by the sugar estate to house mules and horses. It was nick-named "The Horse Stable".
In 1948 it opened its doors under the headship of Mr. Edward Beharry and given the name "Skeldon Lutheran School".
In November 1956, the Youth Arm of the Lutheran Church contributed and built a school in the present compound. Students started going there in 1957.
In 1957 the new building was opened and the laboratory was opened in 1958. In 1958, Skeldon Lutheran School became a Government-Aided School, where the government assisted in paying teachers’ salaries. All along it was a fee-paying school.
Around 1970, the old parsonage was converted to the present school building. In 1978 the government took over and its name changed to "Skeldon High School". The paying of fees by students ceased. An additional section was built in l973 and 1976.
In l997 a “New Wing” was made which resulted in giving the school an 'L' shape. This project was funded by SIMAP Funding Agency. The “New Wing” consists of an auditorium on the upper flat; the headmaster’s office, a library room, a computer room and three classrooms on the lower flat.
Today, Skeldon High School is still referred to as “LUTHERAN SCHOOL”, thus the name SKELDON [LUTHERAN] HIGH SCHOOL, which is written on its sign board.
Skeldon High School has nineteen classes- five form ones, four form twos, and four form Threes, four form fours and two form fives.
In the mornings, school begins at 8am, dismisses at 11 am and in the afternoon session, school begins at 12 noon and ends at 2pm.
Skeldon High School has approximately six hundred students and twenty-seven teachers. There are five departmental heads namely Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies and Business.
The school has an active P.T.A body. This body runs the school canteen, which generate funds to be used for the benefit of the school.
