Over the past five  years, the quality of staff has improved considerably at the New Silvercity Secondary School. Previously there were many unqualified staff members but there are now mainly trained teachers. Eventually it is proposed that all teachers will be trained graduates. The number of staff members has increased because of the varied          curriculum now offered.

I am employed at the New Silver City Secondary School as a Temporary Qualified Assistant. I started working at that school in March 1992. I chose to work at Silver City because it was closer to my home and I preferred to work with students at that academic level.

New Silver City is a fascinating organization - it is comprised of persons of varying backgrounds who provide the students with a wide expanse of learning experiences, knowledge and skills.

Co-curricular activities form an integral part of the school’s curriculum. I am responsible for the Dance program at my school along with Ms Marcia Emerson. We derive pleasure in preparing students for Dance competitions.

When I began working at New Silver City it was a new building, there was very little furniture and other facilities. Both students and teachers were forced to sit on the floor of the classrooms. It was a very frustrating experience for us but we endured until the circumstances improved. Since then Silver City has developed immensely with additions to the building - a Lab has been built which caters to the needs of the Science students. There have been additions to the number of teachers on the staff with numbers to date almost tripling that of the staff in 1992.

New Silver City is a school on the move with ever increasing teacher and student performance both in academic and co-curricular activities. Teachers, students and parents work arduously towards the achievement of the school’s goals. As a teacher at this school I strive to make a meaningful contribution to the school’s development.

The school that I have been apart of for the past four years is located on the Wismar shore. Its physical shape is one of a rectangle. The upper flat consist of three classrooms, an auditorium and a Library. While the lower flat contains several classrooms, the laboratory, the Head Mistress office and the staff room.

The auditorium is used mainly for classes because there is inadequate space in the building, also for special occasions, for example Speech Nights Exercise, Appreciation for Teachers and students. The school has been blessed with the presence of several trained teachers, graduates and teachers who specialize in technical vocational areas.

The students of this school participate in many co curriculum activities. These include sports, dance, drama and many social and environmental issues. These assist them in their sportsmanship, competitive spirit and co-operation among each other.

The teachers of this school enjoy a variety of activities other than in the classroom with their students, luncheons, dinners, picnics and social activities are also planned to facilitate staff interaction.

Greta Carew

A bouncing baby girl was born in the month of August to a peaceful and ambitious couple who lived in a little village called Buxton on the East Coast of Demerara. She was given three uncommon names: Greta, Georgina, Almeria that were carefully selected by Antique Barbadian woman who really thought that she had done a wonderful job. Greta, who was well groomed by her parents attended Roman Catholic Primary School and Buxton Government Secondary School respectively.

Greta migrated to Linden in the year 1971 and was married to Franklin in the year 1972. This union produced seven children – four boys and three girls.

Greta is now employed with the Ministry Of Education as a teacher and teaches Forms 1, 2 and 3B.

Because of her love for singing, she is in charge of the choir at New Silvercity Secondary
School.
