Description
Iwokrama is an area of pristine rain forest
in central Guyana, 300 km south of Georgetown. It was set aside by
the government as a study in order to promote the sustainable use
of the rain forest. The field-station where you stay is located in
a beautiful, tranquil spot next to the Essequibo river at Kurupukari.
The rangers are very knowledgeable and friendly and are essential
to make the visit worthwhile.
Things To Do
Trips include caiman spotting on the river
at night, a climb up Turtle Mountain
(a small hill!) and a visit to an Amerindian village. The breathtaking
view over the forest canopy from Turtle Mountain certainly makes the
short climb more than worthwhile. Wildlife that you may see include
spider monkeys, howler monkeys, parakeets, toucans and perhaps a jaguar
if you are lucky.

Accommodation and Food
Once you are at Iwokrama all meals, accommodation
and excursions are provided. We were charged GUY $23,000 each to stay
for two days. However prices vary according to season, length of visit
and size of group so check the web site for details (www.iwokrama.org)
or contact Collette McDermot (Head of Eco-tourism at Iwokrama) Tel:
225-1504. Collette will try her best to accommodate you and has even
managed to fit 30 people into Iwokrama at one time, although the average
group size is around 10.

Additional Information
I can recommend Chris King Tel: 225-4338 for
transportation. He charged GUY $9000 each for the return trip when he took
a group of eight of us. You can arrange for Iwokrama to transport you from
Georgetown to the reserve but it will generally work out more expensive.
