Description
Bartica is a lively town on the Essequibo river with a different atmosphere to the coastal towns of Guyana.

Marshall Falls is a picturesque waterfall on the Mazaruni River.

Things To Do
Walk through the rain forest to the waterfall, where you can swim and climb the falls.

Route
Georgetown to Parika by # 32 minibus = GUY $160
Parika to Bartica by speedboat takes 1 hour and costs GUY $900.

Once in Bartica you can arrange for a trip to the falls - ask for “Balkaran” (Tel: 455-2544). He will take you to the falls and Kyk-over-Al, a Dutch fort at the confluence of the Mazaruni and Cuyuni Rivers. The charge for the boat is GUY $10,000 carrying about 8 people. The landing fee at the falls is GUY $500 per person.

Accommodation and Food
There are four reputable hotels in Bartica - be wary of the others as they have a poor reputation!

Zen’s, and Castillo’s are both central and pricey. Castillo’s has a lively bar at night and tends to be noisy. Zen’s is off the High Street and so is quieter. Hotel Modern is cheap, central and clean, although very noisy. All three are close to the main stelling. Hi-Lo Hotel is situated at the far end of the main street (about a 10 minute walk to the main stelling) but it does have a landing opposite if you can persuade the boatman to drop you straight there. It is very clean, quiet and reasonably priced.

Take a picnic to eat at Marshall Falls.

Additional Information
Bartica is a large town and so has shops selling everything! Beware though - Barticians take a siesta so everything closes in the afternoon and opens late into the night.
