Description
This is an Amerindian village in the Pomeroon. The journey to Akawini is really the trip, as it involves a boat journey and a walk to the village.

Things To Do
Walking
Nature watching
Enjoying beautiful sunrises and sunsets
Camping

Route
To arrange this, you would need to contact the ‘Juiceman’ Tel: 771 4093. Explain that you are a VSO and ask him to arrange for a boat and permission from the Captain of the village for you and your party to stay at the Primary School. Alternatively go to Charity and ask for ‘Sultan’ at the stelling. He has a boat and can also arrange for permission to stay at the village school.

The boat journey takes you some of the way, and then it is about 2 ˝ - 3 ˝ hours walk along a track. The boat will pick up a guide on the way, who will take you about half way and then point you in the direction along the established track. When you reach the village at the end of the track you will need to take a boat across to the school. They will be expecting you. Bargain the price - once we explained that we were working for a local salary the Captain of the boat dropped the price considerably.

Total number of persons that can go is 10 due to the capacity of the boat

Accommodation and Food
The Primary School is comfortable if you have hammocks and nets – but be careful of the beams, they don’t look too stable.

Additional Information
We cooked on an open fire, bathed in the creek and watched beautiful sunsets and sunrises, not to mention the monkeys, giant ants etc along the walk. Well worth it!
