Additional Information Description Santa Rosa is a collection of small islands that are distinct islands in the rainy season when the savannah floods, but linked by paths and bridges that are crossable in the dry season. The main village, Moruca, has the Police Station, Hospital, Post Office and a cluster of shops. The captain of the village resides in Moruca and it is
good manners to acqaint yourself with him and ask his permission to stay.
Permits are available for travel into this Amerindian area from the Office
of Amerindian Affairs in Georgetown, but are really a formality that don’t
seem to be of necessity anymore.
Route Trans-Guyana fly on Monday/Wednesday/Friday/Saturday, departing Ogle at 10:00 am. The flight takes approx. 1 hour and you will share the Mabaruma flight - check for return times and confirmation procedure. (Nadine at Kayman Sankar Travel is very helpful with flights to the interior, Tel: 225-9875).
Overland: Charity to Santa Rosa by speedboat takes approx. 2 hours = GUY $2,000. Ask at the stelling in Charity for boats to Santa Rosa. *You should get to the stelling
in Charity before 10:00 am to arrange for the boat*
Accommodation and Food There is a guest house with meals provided. This is
located a mile or so away from the main landing and only reachable by boat
(speedboats will drop you off there - you may be able to borrow a canoe or
stop other boats to reach the main village). This can be booked by writing
to Santa Rosa Guest House, Acqero Post Office, Moruca River, Region One.
Additional Information Uncle Basil is a local character who has written books
and poems on the Amerindians and lives in Santa Rosa. He has a small
library / shop selling local wares and has been known to entertain
many visitors to the area. He is worth seeking out if you have time.
