GBET Update: October 23, 2002

The GBET project is a five year capacity building project funded by a grant of approximately four and a half million Canadian dollars donated by CIDA.

Its primary goal is to improve the quality of basic education in Guyana through teacher training. The project began in 1999 and should be completed in March 2004.

The main stakeholder of the project is Cyril Potter College of Education. The capacity of the College has been developed to deliver Distance Education Foundation or Upgrading Courses in four subject areas to unqualified teachers in the hinterland and deep riverain areas of Regions 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9.

Approximately 400 teachers are on this programme. On completion of this upgrading programme the teacher trainees will be eligible to enter the Cyril Potter College of Education to pursue the trained teacher’s certificate programme.

In addition to this upgrading or foundation programme the project has also developed the capacity of the College to deliver a Level One distance education Teacher Certificate Programme. At present, 551 teacher trainees are pursuing this distance education programme at five out of the six CPCE in-service centres.

For both programmes the medium of delivery is the printed material but GBET with CPCE will be looking at alternative support for the printed material by experimenting with audio cassettes and the radio.

GBET has also completed a Distance Education School Management Programme in Region Two. The capacity and skills of 21 school managers and administrators were strengthened through this programme. The institution responsible for this component was NCERD and very shortly NCERD will be replicating this project in all ten administrative regions..

The final project component is the Strengthening of Stakeholder Capacity for Distance Education Programme Delivery. For CPCE, a computerized distance education unit or department has been established and all members of staff have been trained in the writing of distance education modules. Several staff members have benefited from overseas training and participation at international conferences.
