GBET - Guyana Basic Education Teacher Training Project

STRUCTURE OF THE PROJECT

The project has four components

GBET Update - October 2002

GBET really means "Improving Guyana Basic Education Teacher Training Project."

THE PRIMARY GOAL is to improve the quality of basic education in Guyana.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES are:

  • Increased number of teachers qualified and trained in hinterland regions.
  • Increased number of head and deputy headteachers, Regional Education Officers, DE Supervisors and Inspectors certified in Education Management in hinterland regions.
  • Improved rationalization and functioning of DE resources support services and mechanisms

THE FOUNDATION/UPGRADING PROGRAMME

Targets all unqualified teacher in the hinterland region 1, 7, 8 and 9 and riverain areas of regions 2 and 4. The programme includes courses in English, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies offered up to the CXC General proficiency level. The programme is based primarily on directed independent study, limited self-pacing with the opportunity for interactive activities with tutors and colleagues at monthly tutorials. Materials are print-based. Teachers who are successful at this Foundation Level will be eligible to enroll at CPCE for the teaching certificate programme.

THE TEACHING CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME

The CPCE curriculum is being revised and will also be structured to accommodate the demands of a distance education mode. Persons are soon to be trained in how to write for DE and will then prepare the face-to-face certificate modules for DE. All eligible teachers from outlying areas and particularly hinterland regions will be able to access teacher education by distance. CPCE is now a dual-mode institution.

THE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME

Aimed at strengthening the capacity and skills of school managers and administrators which includes the development and delivery of a DE School Management Programme. Responsibility for this component lies with NCERD (National Centre for Educational Resource Development) and so far, the needs analysis has been completed and writers have been working on the modules for the programme.

STRENGTHENING STAKEHOLDER CAPACITY FOR DE PROGRAMME DELIVERY

It is the programme where emphasis is placed on activities which promote stakeholder collaboration through the participation in and sponsoring of joint research efforts, conferences, seminars and workshops; resource rationalization and capacity building both physically and academically focusing on specific needs and skills to sustain DE in Guyana.
