Moruca Amerindian Land Council Mapping Project

The Moruca Amerindian Land Council and the APA have come together to work on a resource mapping project in the Moruca Sub-Region, Region 1. This project covers the villages of Manawarin, Waramuri, Santa Rosa, Assakata, Barama Mouth (Santa Cruz) and Kwebanna.

Two of the persons involved in the Upper Mazaruni mapping project in 1996, Virgil Ferreira and John Andries, are responsible for the training of the three mapping team members, Mark Atkinson, Ronald Fitzallen and Dennis Torres. These persons were drawn from the Moruca Sub-region.

The main aim of the project is to document Amerindian occupation and use of the land in the area through the gathering of data and by plotting this information on to maps. This information can be used for various purposes, including acting as a resource guide for futher development plans for the communities.

The project is important for these communities in establishing rights to the land they occupy and use, taking into consideration the growing population and increased pressure on the lands that the community have at their disposal.
