Guyanese Delegation in Venezuela-------------------------------------->
In July, Indigenous leaders and organisations from Guyana, Brazil and Venezuela met in Caracas, Venezuela to discuss issues that commonly affect Indigenous peoples in these territories. The APA was represented by an eleven-member contingent out of Regions 1,2, 7, 8 and 9 and
was headed by David James, President of the APA. Venezuela was represented by the National Indigenous Council of Venezuela (CONIVE) and the Federation of Indigenous Peoples of Bolivar (FIB).
Over the five days, there were discussions on land rights and demarcation of Indigenous territories, constitutional reform, bio-diversity and Indigenous knowledge, among other subjects. Ways of working together on these issues were also discussed as it was found that Indigenous peoples in these countries face similar problems.
After the meeting the Guyanese representatives were involved in a one day media workshop which included use of the video camera, filming, editing and conducting interviews.
A follow up meeting is to be held in Guyana next year at a date yet to be decided.
